Time Zone

Vienna is in the Central European time zone (CET = GMT / UCT + 1). Daylight saving time applies from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October (CEST).

Currency

The official currency in Austria is the Euro (€)

VAT

The standard VAT rate is 20%, with reduced rates of 13% and 10%, plus a 0% rate for
international transport and hotel accommodation.

Electrical Appliances

Just like the rest of Europe, the voltage in Austria is 230 volts and the frequency is 50 Hz. Austria has standardized on type F sockets and plugs. Appliances from North America need a transformer and those from England an adaptor. To avoid the danger of short circuit, make sure to have in your suitcase the necessary transformers / adaptors for your electronic devices or make sure that this will be provided by the relevant socket.

Tipping

In Vienna, it is customary to tip in restaurants by rounding up the bill or leaving a 5-10% gratuity, especially for good service. Tipping is not standard in bars and cafes, but you can
round up or leave small change if you wish.

Credit Cards

ATMs or Cash Machines are widely available, except for smaller non-tourist villages. It is recommended for cash withdrawals to use a Debit Card since Credit Cards will hit you with a larger fee. All major credit cards are widely accepted in Austria.

Opening Hours

Stores in Vienna are generally open Monday to Friday from 9am to 6:30 pm, although you may
find some independent stores open later and close earlier than that. On Saturdays, stores in
Vienna are open until 5pm, with a few staying open until 6pm.

Saturdays typically 08:00–12:00 or 13:00.
Sundays & nights pharmacies rotate an emergency service (Notdienst). Always at least one pharmacy per district open at night or on holidays.
